✈️ Small Plane Crashes into San Diego Neighborhood, Killing at Least One and Setting Homes Ablaze

A small aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in San Diego, California, igniting multiple homes and vehicles and leaving at least one person dead, officials confirmed.

The crash occurred in the Murphy Canyon area, not far from Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, when a Cessna 550 light jet traveling from Kansas plunged into a military housing community. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the aircraft was flying at an altitude of about 500 feet when it disappeared from radar. No emergency signal was transmitted before the crash.

"The last communication from the pilot indicated the plane was about three miles from landing," said Dan Eddy, deputy fire chief of San Diego Fire-Rescue. "The skies were foggy at the time, and we are confirming more than one fatality." The Cessna 550 model typically carries up to eight people.

The crash sparked fires that engulfed at least 10 homes and several parked vehicles. Flames and thick smoke consumed parts of the street, but remarkably, no ground casualties were reported. “It’s nothing short of a miracle,” Eddy said.

The impacted area is primarily home to military families, with San Diego hosting several major Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard facilities.

“I was asleep when I saw a flash through the window followed by a loud boom,” said local resident Jennifer Hoffman in an interview with ABC News. “At first I thought it was thunder, but then there were several popping sounds. I ran outside and the whole block was glowing red—it was terrifying.”

Zane Baker, a local high school student, said police went door to door evacuating residents shortly after the crash.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, and federal officials are expected to review flight data and pilot communications in the coming days.
