🇨🇦 Canada Considering Investment in Trump’s $175 Billion “Golden Dome” Missile Shield
Canada is weighing a potential investment in former President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, a massive $175 billion initiative designed to intercept intercontinental and space-based missile threats.
Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that he has had multiple discussions with Trump regarding the project, which aims to create a continental missile shield similar in concept—but far more expansive—than Israel’s Iron Dome.
“If we want to, we have the capacity to participate in the Golden Dome through investments in partnership with the United States,” Carney said. “That’s exactly what we’re considering. It’s a sensible move to protect the people and the nation of Canada.”
While Carney declined to reveal how much Canada might contribute, he emphasized that decisions around defense spending would be evaluated carefully. “These are military decisions, and we’ll assess them accordingly,” he said.
President Trump officially unveiled the Golden Dome project during a press event, describing it as a next-generation global defense network with the ability to intercept missile attacks launched from across the globe—or even from space. He stated the system is projected to be completed by 2029 and confirmed that Canada had expressed interest in joining the initiative.
“The Canadian government has reached out, and we’re working to ensure they contribute their fair share,” Trump said.
Modeled loosely on Israel’s Iron Dome, Trump’s Golden Dome would reportedly include a constellation of surveillance and strike satellites capable of detecting and neutralizing threats in real time. Experts note the system’s scope would be far greater, aiming to offer full-hemisphere protection.
However, defense analysts have raised doubts about both the feasibility and the budget estimates. While Trump has put the cost at $175 billion, a U.S. Congressional Budget Office report previously projected such a program could balloon to more than $830 billion over two decades.
Funding remains uncertain. Congressional Republicans have proposed an initial $25 billion investment tied to a broader $150 billion legislative package, which is currently facing roadblocks in the U.S. Congress.
The project has also drawn international criticism. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Golden Dome plan, warning that it could destabilize the global security landscape and turn outer space into a battlefield.
“We urge the United States to abandon its pursuit of a global missile defense system as soon as possible,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
