🇺🇸 U.S. to Withdraw Frontline F-15E Units from Europe

The U.S. Air Force will withdraw its forward-deployed F-15E Strike Eagle squadrons from the United Kingdom, despite the aircraft's high operational demand in both Europe and the Middle East.

In a Senate hearing, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin confirmed that two F-15E squadrons currently based at RAF Lakenheath in England will be repositioned to the continental United States. He did not specify the timeline or the new home base for the units.

These squadrons represent the only permanently stationed forward Strike Eagle units in the U.S. military, operating approximately 50 aircraft. They’ve played a key role in numerous missions across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, including long-range strikes in Syria and combat support operations in Libya.

While the Pentagon hasn’t officially announced a replacement platform, defense analyst Thomas Newdick of The War Zone suggests that the U.S. may boost its European presence with additional F-35A stealth fighters. Two F-35A squadrons are already stationed at Lakenheath and are expected to achieve full combat readiness by the end of this year.

The F-15E jets at Lakenheath are equipped with upgraded engines and advanced mission systems, giving them an edge over similar aircraft based in the U.S. Gen. Allvin emphasized that bringing these more modern jets back stateside will enhance readiness and training capabilities for future missions.

Another potential path forward involves deploying the next-generation F-15EX, which offers expanded weapons capacity and avionics upgrades. “A mix of F-15EX and F-35A would provide the ideal balance of air superiority and strike capabilities, especially for high-tempo operations,” Newdick noted.
