California Governor and Vice President Vance Clash Online Over LA Protests

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Vice President J.D. Vance exchanged sharp words on social media over the ongoing protests in Los Angeles, following the federal government’s deployment of National Guard troops.

On June 9, President Donald Trump expressed support for “border czar” Tom Homan’s suggestion to arrest Governor Newsom. The California governor fired back later that day in a post on X.

“The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting governor. I had hoped this day would never come in America. I don’t care if the president is a Democrat or a Republican—this is a line we cannot cross as a nation,” Newsom wrote. “This is clearly a step toward authoritarianism.”

Two hours later, Vice President Vance responded bluntly: “Do your job. That’s all we’re asking.”

Governor Newsom replied in kind: “Do YOUR job. We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved. Rescind the National Guard order. Return control to California.”

Neither the Vice President’s office nor the White House has issued a public statement about the exchange.

President Trump signed an executive order on June 7 to send 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to quell what he described as “lawlessness” amid protests over immigration raids. On June 9, he ordered an additional 2,000 Guard members to deploy. Governor Newsom blasted the decision as “reckless, pointless, and disrespectful to the military.”

In addition to the Guard troops, 700 U.S. Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles to protect federal personnel and property.

Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit on June 9 in federal court in San Francisco, seeking to block Trump’s National Guard deployment. The lawsuit argues the move violates the Tenth Amendment by infringing on state authority.

Meanwhile, the California governor announced plans to mobilize over 800 additional state and local police officers to help keep the peace. “Chaos is exactly what Trump wants. Now California is left to clean up the mess,” Newsom said.
