California Governor Fires Back at Trump’s ‘Border Boss’: “Come and Get Me”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has openly challenged the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, daring a top federal advisor to arrest him after threats were made over the state’s refusal to cooperate with deportation raids in Los Angeles.

“The so-called ‘border boss’ working for Trump is threatening to arrest me for speaking out,” Newsom wrote on X on the evening of June 8, alongside a video from his MSNBC interview. “Come and get me, tough guy.”

“I’m not afraid,” he added. “You’re not going to scare me into silence when it comes to defending Californians.” The post has since garnered over a million views.

The comments came after Tom Homan, former ICE director and Trump’s top immigration advisor—once dubbed the “border boss” by the former president—warned that federal agents would crack down on anyone interfering with ongoing deportation operations in L.A.

“We’re going to enforce immigration law in Los Angeles—every single day,” Homan said. “I don’t care if they like it or not.”

When asked whether that warning included elected officials like Mayor Karen Bass or Governor Newsom, Homan didn’t hold back:
“I’ll say this to anyone—if you’re harboring illegal immigrants, that’s a felony. If you obstruct law enforcement, that’s a felony too.”

He went on to call Newsom “an embarrassment” to California.
“I’ve got zero respect for that man,” Homan said. “Undocumented immigrants are walking the streets of California because of his policies. I don’t care what the governor thinks of me—I’m not running a popularity contest.”

Governor Newsom fired back, urging Homan to stop targeting immigrant communities.
“Keep your hands off four-year-old girls who just want to go to school,” he said. “Leave these people alone—people who’ve paid their taxes, lived here for 10 years, and are just trying to survive.”

Los Angeles, home to more than 1.35 million immigrants—roughly 34% of the city’s population—is widely considered a sanctuary city. Protests have rocked the city for the past three days, following aggressive ICE raids on immigrant neighborhoods.

In response, President Trump authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to L.A.—a move that bypassed state approval and marked the first time a president has sent troops into a state without its consent. Newsom has strongly condemned the action and sent a formal letter to the Secretary of Defense demanding the order be rescinded and state control restored.
