California Governor Urges Trump to Cancel National Guard Deployment to Los Angeles

California Governor Gavin Newsom is demanding that President Donald Trump reverse his decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, calling the move “unlawful” and a direct challenge to the state’s authority.

“There is no need for the National Guard in Los Angeles,” Newsom wrote in a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on June 8. “This prolonged, unauthorized deployment is a serious violation of state sovereignty and seems intentionally designed to escalate tensions.”

Newsom also posted the letter on social media with the caption: “Rescind the order. Give California back control.” He added that his state had managed public safety effectively—“until President Trump got involved.”

President Trump ordered the deployment in response to growing protests against ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles. According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the decision came after “violent mobs” attacked federal agents during enforcement operations.

Governor Newsom condemned the raids and urged residents to remain calm and nonviolent. “Speak up, but stay peaceful,” he wrote. “Don’t give Donald Trump what he wants.”

Los Angeles—home to more than 1.35 million immigrants, making up 34% of the city’s population—is widely regarded as a “sanctuary city.” Demonstrations turned violent over the weekend after ICE agents, armed and masked, conducted aggressive raids in immigrant neighborhoods.

The National Guard serves as a military reserve force for the U.S. armed forces and typically operates under state control, reporting directly to governors. However, the president can federalize the Guard during times of war or national emergency.

This is the first time a sitting U.S. president has deployed the National Guard into a state without the consent—or request—of that state’s government. The White House says Trump invoked the rarely used Title 10 authority, which allows federal control of the Guard during “insurrection or threat of insurrection against the government.”
