Canada's Prime Minister: “We Must Never Forget America’s Betrayal”

Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada would never forget the “betrayal by the United States,” as his Liberal Party secured control of Parliament following the April 28 election.

“We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7,” Carney said to a crowd of supporters in Ottawa on April 29, referencing the world’s top seven economies: Canada, the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Carney also warned of “tough days ahead” in response to U.S. tariffs and President Donald Trump’s recent threats to annex Canada. “We’ve endured the shock of betrayal by the United States, but we must never forget its lessons,” he said. Carney added that Canada’s previously deepening integration with the U.S. “is over.”

“The open global trade system built and backed by America — imperfect but a pillar of Canada’s post–World War II prosperity — is gone. That’s a tragedy, but it’s also our new reality,” he added.

The comments came as Carney’s Liberal Party pulled off a comeback victory, earning a full four-year term in office. Though they fell short of a majority, the win was a surprise turnaround after weeks of trailing in the polls. The Liberals will now need to negotiate with smaller parties to govern.

The opposition Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, had been on track to win — until Trump’s inflammatory remarks and the abrupt resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shifted momentum late in the race.

Conceding on April 29, Poilievre pledged to work across party lines to push back on Trump’s escalating trade policies.

“We will always put Canada first,” Poilievre said. “The Conservative Party will work with the Prime Minister and all parties to defend Canadian interests, negotiate new trade deals, eliminate unfair tariffs, and protect our national sovereignty.”

The Canadian election took place amid growing pressure from President Trump, who has floated ideas of annexation and introduced sweeping new tariffs.

“Best of luck to the great people of Canada,” Trump posted on Truth Social the day before the election. “Elect someone with the strength and smarts to cut your taxes in half, boost your military for free, and take your auto, steel, aluminum, timber, and energy industries to four times their size — all tax-free. All you have to do is become our proud 51st state.”

His comments triggered bipartisan backlash in Canada.

“In Canada, Canadians will decide,” Prime Minister Carney wrote in response.

Poilievre, who had largely avoided criticizing Trump during the campaign, responded bluntly: “Stay out of our election. Canada will remain independent, sovereign, and never be America’s 51st state.”
