CIA May Cut 1,200 Jobs as Intelligence Agencies Face Workforce Overhaul
The CIA is preparing to eliminate up to 1,200 positions as part of a sweeping workforce reduction under President Donald Trump’s administration, according to a report by The Washington Post on May 2. The cuts are expected to take place gradually over several years, primarily through reduced hiring rather than mass layoffs.
While a CIA spokesperson did not confirm the exact figure, they stated that Director John Ratcliffe is moving quickly to align the agency’s personnel with the national security priorities of the Trump administration.
“These changes are part of a broader strategy to reinvigorate the agency, empower emerging leaders, and better position the CIA to fulfill its mission,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier this year, the CIA became the first U.S. intelligence agency to join President Trump’s voluntary federal workforce reduction initiative, part of his push to streamline the federal government for efficiency and cost savings.
Director Ratcliffe reportedly told lawmakers that under his leadership, the CIA will deliver "deep, objective analysis from everyone—never allowing political or personal bias to cloud our judgment or affect our assessments."
In addition to intelligence gathering, he emphasized the agency's role in conducting covert operations under presidential directives. “We go where no one else can go, and we do what no one else can do,” Ratcliffe said.
“If that still sounds like why you joined this mission—get ready to make a difference. If not, it may be time to find a new job,” he added, addressing CIA personnel directly.
The CIA does not publicly disclose its workforce size, but analysts estimate the agency employs approximately 22,000 people.
The Trump administration has also notified lawmakers of similar downsizing plans across other intelligence agencies, including the National Security Agency (NSA), the Post reported.
