DOGE Accidentally Fires 2,000 U.S. Health Workers, Kennedy Vows to Reinstate

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed on April 3 that around 2,000 healthcare workers were mistakenly laid off in a cost-cutting effort led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and pledged to restore their positions.

“People who should not have been fired were fired,” Kennedy told reporters. “We’re working to bring them back.”

The layoffs were part of a broader federal workforce reduction initiative spearheaded by DOGE, a powerful new agency overseeing government streamlining, chaired by tech billionaire Elon Musk. On April 1, roughly 10,000 health employees were dismissed across various departments. Kennedy revealed that approximately 20% of those cuts were erroneous.

Among the most notable missteps was the elimination of the entire staff at the CDC’s Lead Poisoning Prevention and Surveillance Branch (LPPSA), which plays a key role in monitoring lead exposure nationwide. Kennedy did not specify which other departments would have positions restored, beyond LPPSA.

DOGE, established under the new administration, has been aggressively cutting public spending and slashing the size of the federal workforce. Thousands of government employees across multiple agencies have already lost their jobs in recent weeks.

During the new administration’s first full Cabinet meeting on February 26, Musk warned that the United States could face fiscal collapse unless DOGE took immediate action to “right-size” the government.

The campaign, however, has sparked intense backlash—not just from Democrats, but also within the Republican Party itself. Some GOP lawmakers have come under fire from constituents for supporting what critics call “reckless cuts” that risk undermining critical public services and uprooting the lives of millions of civil servants and their families.

Kennedy’s move to reverse some of the layoffs signals growing tensions between government departments and DOGE’s aggressive efficiency drive, as pressure mounts on the administration to balance reform with responsibility.
