Four European Nations Urge 30-Day Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine Starting Next Week

In a unified diplomatic move, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom have jointly called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to begin next Monday — a proposal they announced following high-level talks in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We have agreed to support an unconditional ceasefire starting next Monday,” French President Emmanuel Macron said on May 10 during a joint press conference in Kyiv alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and President Zelensky.

The announcement followed a day of in-person discussions in Kyiv and virtual consultations with representatives from roughly 20 other nations in the pro-Ukraine coalition.

Macron said the proposed ceasefire would be monitored primarily by the United States, with support from European nations. He emphasized that the truce — if enacted — would open the door to “immediate negotiations aimed at building a lasting and sustainable peace.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed that message, stating: “Today’s position reflects a unified stance among several nations, including the U.S., on the need for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that the group is now awaiting Moscow’s response to the proposal.

In a post on X, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the five leaders held “productive” talks with U.S. President Donald Trump focused on peace efforts. Sybiha said all parties expressed support for a “full and unconditional ceasefire across land, sea, and air for at least 30 days.”

Neither the Kremlin nor the White House has officially commented on the proposed ceasefire.

This marks the first time leaders of the UK, France, Germany, and Poland have jointly visited Ukraine. For Chancellor Merz, who took office just this week, it was his first trip to Ukraine as head of the German government. President Macron last visited Kyiv in June 2022 alongside leaders from Germany and Italy.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on May 9 that Russia is open to a 30-day ceasefire — but only after “minor differences” are fully addressed. In an interview published today, Peskov suggested the West would need to suspend military aid to Ukraine before any truce could take effect. “Otherwise, it would only serve to benefit Ukraine,” he added.

Since President Trump assumed office, the U.S. has stepped up diplomatic efforts to broker a peace agreement, though no breakthrough has yet been achieved. Still, the Trump administration says talks are progressing and that most key terms of a potential ceasefire deal have already been agreed upon.
