Germany Gifts Trump Framed Replica of Grandfather’s Birth Certificate

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented former President Donald Trump with a gold-framed replica of his grandfather’s birth certificate during a White House meeting on June 5—a symbolic gesture honoring the Trump family’s German roots.

The certificate belonged to Friedrich Trump, who was born in Kallstadt, Germany, in 1869 before immigrating to the United States as a teenager.

“Very German,” Trump remarked with a smile as he accepted the gift. “Thank you very much. It’s beautiful, truly wonderful. We’ll hang it in a place of honor.”

The ornate, gold-trimmed frame echoed the gilded aesthetic Trump has brought to the Oval Office, known for its lavish décor, gold-plated statues, and framed memorabilia. The gift joins a growing collection of personalized items from world leaders: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once gave Trump a gold-plated pager, while former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba gifted him a gold-inlaid samurai helmet.

Friedrich Trump immigrated to the U.S. at age 16, first working as a barber before finding success in the restaurant and hospitality business. He eventually settled in New York, laying the financial foundation for the Trump family fortune. He died in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic.
