India Investigates Engine, Flaps, and Landing Gear After Deadly Air India Crash

Indian authorities have recovered the flight data recorder from the Air India AI171 crash site and are focusing their investigation on possible failures involving the engine thrust, wing flaps, or landing gear, according to Reuters.

The country’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau confirmed that investigators found the plane’s black box on the rooftop of a medical school dormitory near the crash site. Officials say they are now "fully mobilized" to determine what caused the deadly crash, which killed at least 265 people both onboard and on the ground.

Flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed just seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad, slamming into the dormitory in one of the deadliest air disasters globally in over a decade. This marks the first fatal crash involving the Dreamliner model since its commercial debut in 2011.

The black box is expected to play a crucial role in uncovering what went wrong. Its data will provide insights into engine performance, pilot controls, and cockpit conversations leading up to the crash.

“The flight recorder should quickly reveal whether there was a loss of engine thrust or lift shortly after takeoff, helping identify a preliminary cause,” said Paul Fromme, head of aerospace at the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Reuters, citing sources familiar with the investigation, reported that Air India and the Indian government are now zeroing in on mechanical issues such as engine thrust anomalies, flap deployment, and a possible failure to retract the landing gear after takeoff.

Bird strike is not considered a leading cause at this stage. Anti-terror experts have also joined the probe, though no links to sabotage have been confirmed.

Sources added that investigators are also examining whether maintenance lapses by Air India may have contributed to the disaster. Neither Air India, the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation, nor Boeing has commented publicly so far.

In response, India’s civil aviation ministry has ordered enhanced maintenance protocols for all Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft. Starting June 15, all Air India Dreamliners must undergo pre-departure rechecks of takeoff parameters for every flight.

Within two weeks, Air India is also required to update its preflight inspection checklist to include a dedicated review of flight control systems and engine thrust capability.
