Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq Demand U.S. Troop Withdrawal Amid Escalating Tensions

Iran-aligned militias in Iraq are calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces, warning that continued American presence risks dragging the region into broader conflict.

Kataeb Hezbollah, a powerful Iraqi Shiite militia with close ties to Tehran, accused the United States of aiding Israel’s recent air campaign against Iran — known as Operation Rising Lion. In a statement, the group claimed that U.S. forces facilitated Israeli airstrikes by allowing access to Iraqi airspace.

“To prevent Iraq from becoming a battleground,” the group declared, “Baghdad must urgently expel all hostile foreign forces to avoid further wars in the region.”

Akram al-Kaabi, leader of the Iran-backed Al-Nujaba Movement, echoed the sentiment, condemning what he described as U.S. coordination with Israel and demanding a full withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Shiite militias supported by Iran have played a significant role in Iraq's fight against ISIS. Since the defeat of the terror group, many of these groups have become integrated into the Iraqi military under the umbrella of the so-called “Axis of Resistance,” gaining growing political and military influence within the country.

The United States currently maintains approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq, officially tasked with preventing a resurgence of ISIS. However, tensions between U.S. forces and Iran-aligned militias have remained high for years.

Since the October 2023 outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, militias within the Axis of Resistance have launched multiple drone and rocket attacks on U.S. military bases in Iraq and Syria.

Tensions escalated dramatically after Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a major preemptive strike involving more than 200 fighter jets targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. In response, Iran launched "True Promise 3", firing waves of ballistic missiles at dozens of Israeli military targets in a wide-scale retaliation.

The growing regional crisis is now drawing in actors far beyond Iran and Israel, raising fears of a broader war in the Middle East.
