Israel and Iran Clash at United Nations as Tensions Boil Over
Israeli and Iranian diplomats traded sharp accusations at an emergency UN Security Council session, as both countries escalate military and rhetorical conflict following a dramatic exchange of airstrikes.
Speaking before the council, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon accused Iran of preparing for war and defended Israel’s recent airstrikes as acts of national self-defense. “We took this action not because we wanted to, but because we had no choice,” Danon said, claiming Israeli intelligence revealed coordinated attack plans by Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
“This planned assault would have been far more sophisticated than the October 7th attack,” he said, referencing the 2023 Hamas-led assault on southern Israel. “This wasn’t just a dream. It was real. And it was imminent.”
Danon insisted Israel’s preemptive campaign, Operation Rising Lion, was launched to protect its citizens. He also criticized the stalled diplomatic process. “We waited patiently for diplomacy to work, but Iran offered nothing but fake concessions and rejected even the most basic conditions.”
The ambassador added that Israeli intelligence now believes Iran could produce enough enriched uranium for multiple nuclear bombs within days.
In response, Iran’s Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani condemned Israel’s attacks as illegal and aggressive, targeting peaceful nuclear sites, military bases, civilian infrastructure, and residential areas. “Seventy-eight people have been killed — many of them civilians — and over 320 injured,” Iravani told the council. “These deliberate, systematic killings are not only unlawful but deeply inhumane.”
He accused Israel of trying to sabotage diplomacy and push the region into a full-scale war, and called out the United States for enabling the attacks. “Supporters of Israel, led by the U.S., must understand they are complicit. By facilitating these crimes, they bear full responsibility for the consequences,” Iravani said.
U.S. official McCoy Pitt, addressing the Security Council, confirmed that Washington was informed in advance about Israel’s strike on Iran but reiterated that the U.S. did not participate in the military action. He emphasized that the U.S. remains committed to a diplomatic resolution that would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons or destabilizing the Middle East.
“It would be wise for Iran’s leadership to engage in serious negotiations now,” Pitt said.
Several UN officials echoed calls for restraint. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that any attack on nuclear facilities — under any circumstances — could have dangerous consequences for both people and the environment. He confirmed that there had been radiological and chemical contamination at Iran’s Natanz enrichment site, but noted the situation was under control and that IAEA experts were ready to assist if requested.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo urged both sides to exercise “maximum restraint” and emphasized that diplomacy remains the best path forward. “A peaceful, negotiated solution is the only way to ensure Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful,” she said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also appealed for an immediate de-escalation after the recent missile exchanges. “Enough is enough. It’s time to stop. Peace and diplomacy must prevail,” Guterres wrote on X.
The crisis sharply escalated after Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on June 13, deploying over 200 fighter jets to strike Iranian nuclear and missile facilities, killing several senior military officials and nuclear scientists.
Iran responded with “True Promise 3,” a retaliatory operation that saw dozens of ballistic missiles launched overnight toward Israeli military installations and airbases.
