Israel Claims Full Control of Tehran's Airspace, Urges Civilians to Evacuate

Israel has declared it now holds full air superiority over Tehran, paving the way for a new wave of strikes and urging residents of the Iranian capital to evacuate immediately.

“The Israeli Air Force has achieved complete air dominance over Tehran’s airspace,” IDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Effie Defrin announced in a press briefing. The term “air dominance” refers to a military’s ability to operate freely in the skies after effectively neutralizing enemy air defenses.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the development as a “turning point” in the ongoing campaign against Iran.

“With full control of Tehran’s skies, we are now able to target all of the regime’s assets in pursuit of our two main objectives: eliminating the nuclear threat and dismantling Iran’s missile capabilities,” Netanyahu said. “We urge the people of Tehran to evacuate—we are about to act.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also issued an urgent warning for civilians to leave District 3 of Tehran, stating: “In the coming hours, the IDF will carry out a military operation in this area, as we’ve done across Tehran in recent days, to target Iran’s military infrastructure.”

Israel’s Defense Minister later posted a message warning that “Iran’s state media and propaganda networks are about to disappear,” hinting that broadcasting facilities may be among the next targets.

Shortly after, Israeli warplanes struck the headquarters of IRIB—Iran’s state broadcasting agency—in central Tehran. Video footage shared on social media appeared to show a live broadcast interrupted by a loud explosion, with a visibly startled anchor fleeing the studio mid-sentence.

The Times of Israel quoted an Israeli official who said the current operation in Iran could last two to three weeks, though the duration will ultimately depend on how far Israel’s leadership chooses to escalate.

The direct conflict between Israel and Iran began on June 13, with a series of airstrikes and counterstrikes causing widespread destruction. Israel reports at least 24 deaths and 592 injuries within its borders, while Iran’s Health Ministry says 224 people have been killed and 1,227 injured by Israeli attacks.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Iran has sent backchannel messages to both Israel and the U.S.—via Arab intermediaries—expressing interest in negotiating a ceasefire and potentially restarting talks over its nuclear program. Neither Israel nor Iran has publicly responded to the report.
