Israel Deploys Over 200 Warplanes in Massive Preemptive Strike on Iran

The Israeli military has launched a large-scale air assault against Iran, deploying more than 200 fighter jets and striking dozens of targets, in what officials describe as a preemptive operation to neutralize Iran’s nuclear threat.

Brigadier General Effie Defrin, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), confirmed on Thursday that over 200 aircraft and more than 300 munitions were used to hit around 100 strategic sites across Iran as part of Operation Rising Lion.

Among those reportedly killed in the airstrikes were top Iranian military officials, including General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces; IRGC commander Hossein Salami; and General Gholam Ali Rashid, head of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command.

The IDF also released footage showing F-35I stealth fighters, as well as F-15 and F-16 jets, taking off from an undisclosed location and later returning safely. The strikes — which targeted both nuclear and military infrastructure — triggered massive explosions in Tehran and other regions, reportedly killing several senior military leaders and nuclear scientists.

Israeli officials stated the offensive would continue until the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program is fully neutralized, framing the operation as an act of national self-defense.

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the early-morning strikes as “criminal attacks on civilian areas,” warning that Israel would face severe consequences. Iran’s military leadership vowed an “unlimited response” against Israeli targets.

The United States confirmed that Israel had notified Washington in advance of the operation, but emphasized that it played no role in the strike. Still, Iran accused the U.S. of supporting the attack and vowed retaliation.

Over the past decade, Iran has made significant advances in its nuclear program, particularly in uranium enrichment. The country has enriched uranium to 60% purity, far exceeding the 3.67% limit set under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran currently possesses nearly 275 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% — dangerously close to the 90% level needed for weapons-grade material.

Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and that it has the right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, no other non-nuclear-armed nation is currently enriching uranium to such high levels.
