Manhunt Underway in Washington Forests for Father Accused of Killing Three Daughters

Authorities in Washington State have launched a massive manhunt for 32-year-old Travis Decker, a former U.S. servicemember accused of murdering his three young daughters and fleeing into the wilderness.

Decker had visitation with his daughters—Olivia, 5; Evelyn, 8; and Paityn, 9—on May 30 in Wenatchee, where they lived with their mother following the couple’s divorce. That night, the girls’ mother contacted police when Decker failed to return them.

On June 2, the girls' bodies were discovered near a remote campsite about 70 miles east of Seattle. Each had a plastic bag over her head. Decker’s pickup truck was later found near Rock Island Campground, not far from where the bodies were recovered.

More than 100 law enforcement officers are now combing the dense forests of north-central Washington in an intensive search. Large portions of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including campgrounds, roads, and trails, have been closed to aid the operation. The U.S. Forest Service has also issued public warnings.

On June 6, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson pledged full state support for the investigation, authorizing National Guard personnel and emergency funding. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deployed two helicopters, and more air support is expected.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals are assisting local agencies.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the case, said it has received over 500 public tips. Investigators are also reviewing surveillance videos and digital evidence.

Decker is wanted on multiple charges, including murder and kidnapping. In the days leading up to the incident, police say he had been researching how to relocate to Canada.

Officials describe Decker as highly skilled in wilderness survival. A former soldier deployed to Afghanistan in 2014, he is believed capable of living off-grid for extended periods.

“This suspect knows how to disappear,” the sheriff’s office said. “But we’re fully equipped and prepared to find and apprehend him.”

The girls’ mother had previously raised red flags about Decker’s mental health. In a custody filing last September, she noted his worsening psychological state, saying he had been unstable and living out of his truck. “He served our country with honor and he loves his daughters dearly—but he needs help,” she wrote.

Authorities are urging people in nearby areas to take precautions and avoid any contact with Decker. Anyone who sees him is urged to call 911 immediately and not approach.
