Putin and Trump Hold 50-Minute Call on Middle East Crisis and Ukraine Peace Talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump held a 50-minute phone call on June 14 to discuss the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine, according to the Kremlin.
Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s top foreign policy adviser, said the two leaders focused on the sharp rise in tensions in the Middle East. Putin condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Iran and warned that further escalation could destabilize the entire region. He also expressed Russia’s willingness to mediate between the two countries.
Trump, for his part, said the U.S. remains open to continuing nuclear talks with Iran, despite the sixth round of negotiations—originally scheduled for June 15 in Oman—being canceled. Iran had accused Washington of supporting Israeli strikes inside its territory.
The call, which Ushakov described as “useful and meaningful,” also touched on the ongoing war in Ukraine. Putin said Russia is ready to resume negotiations with Kyiv and briefed Trump on the progress of the June 2 talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul. Trump reportedly reiterated his desire for a swift resolution to the conflict.
The conversation marked the fourth direct exchange between Putin and Trump since Trump’s return to office, signaling a sharp departure from the Biden administration’s approach to Moscow.
The backdrop to their discussion is a rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East. On June 13, Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” a wave of airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure. The attacks killed at least 78 people and injured hundreds, making it Israel’s largest military operation against Iran to date.
In response, Iran unleashed a two-phase counterattack: roughly 100 drones were launched into Israeli airspace on June 13, followed by the firing of around 200 ballistic missiles on June 14. The retaliatory campaign, dubbed “True Promise 3,” targeted Israeli air bases and military sites.
In a video message released on Trump’s birthday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the former president and underscored their nations’ shared threats.
“Our enemies are your enemies. What we’re facing today will soon threaten us all. Our victory will be your victory,” Netanyahu said.
Despite recent reports of tension between Trump and Netanyahu—especially as Israel’s plans to strike Iran clashed with U.S.-Iran nuclear diplomacy—Trump praised the Israeli airstrikes within hours of the attack, calling them “brilliant” and “highly effective.”
