Putin Thanks North Korea for Sending Troops to Support Russian Forces
Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly thanked North Korea and leader Kim Jong-un for deploying troops to support Russia’s military campaign in the Kursk region, calling their actions a symbol of solidarity and courage.
“Inspired by a spirit of justice, solidarity, and true comradeship, our North Korean friends stood with us. We deeply appreciate Chairman Kim Jong-un, the leadership, and the people of North Korea for their unwavering support,” Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin.
The Russian president praised the “heroic resolve, advanced combat skills, and absolute dedication” of North Korean soldiers during the conflict. “They fought shoulder to shoulder with Russian troops, defending our homeland as if it were their own. They carried out their mission with honor and bravery, and their legacy will never fade,” he added.
North Korea’s Central Military Commission confirmed for the first time that its forces had been deployed in Russia’s Kursk region as part of what it called the “liberation campaign.”
“The successful operation in Kursk brought an end to Ukraine’s reckless offensive against Russian territory. Our forces participated under direct orders from the Supreme Leader, displaying discipline, courage, and readiness to sacrifice—values that are a source of national pride,” the commission said.
According to North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, Kim Jong-un’s decision was based on a mutual defense treaty signed with Russia in June 2024. The pact commits each side to provide immediate military support should the other come under armed attack.
The U.S. and South Korea quickly condemned the move. South Korea’s defense ministry said North Korea’s involvement in a foreign conflict violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department urged Pyongyang to withdraw its troops and called on Moscow to halt its military cooperation with the regime. “Countries that prolong the conflict, including North Korea, must be held accountable,” a State Department spokesperson said.
Ukraine launched its offensive into Russia’s Kursk province in August 2024, aiming to force Moscow to divert troops from Donbas and gain leverage in future negotiations. Initial Ukrainian gains were rapid, with roughly 1,300 square kilometers of territory captured. But Russia quickly reinforced its positions and mounted a large-scale counteroffensive.
On April 26, Russia’s Chief of the General Staff informed President Putin that the Kursk counteroffensive had successfully concluded. He also commended North Korean troops for their performance during the campaign. Kremlin spokesperson Maria Zakharova later emphasized, “Russia will never forget the support of our North Korean friends.”
This marks the first time Russian officials have confirmed North Korea’s military involvement on Russian soil.
Russia’s 810th Naval Infantry Brigade announced on April 27 that it had taken full control of the village of Gornal—Ukraine’s final holdout in Kursk—and was conducting mop-up operations in nearby forests along the border.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, insisted that Ukrainian forces remain active in Kursk. “Our troops continue defending designated positions in Kursk and Belgorod,” he said, though he acknowledged the difficult situation on multiple fronts.
