Trump and Elon Musk Clash in Escalating Feud Over GOP Megabill
Former allies Donald Trump and Elon Musk are now at odds, trading sharp public jabs in a feud that signals a deepening rift between the former president and the tech billionaire.
“We had a great relationship—at least I thought so. I’m honestly surprised,” Trump said in the Oval Office on June 5, referencing his recent fallout with Musk.
The remark came just two days after Musk blasted the Republican Party’s sweeping new spending bill, calling it a “disgusting mistake” and warning that it would further balloon the U.S. national debt, which now exceeds $36 trillion.
“I’m disappointed. Elon understands this bill better than anyone else in the room... and suddenly he’s got a problem with it,” Trump added.
Musk quickly hit back on X, formerly Twitter, denying he had ever seen the bill before it was passed. “False. I’ve never seen this bill, not even once. It was rammed through overnight so fast most lawmakers didn’t even have time to read it,” he wrote.
As Trump continued speaking, Musk unleashed another round of criticism online: “Without me, Trump would’ve lost. Democrats would control the House, and the GOP would be 49-51 in the Senate. So ungrateful.”
Musk also took a personal swipe, alleging Trump was “named in the Epstein files”—a reference to documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking.
In a provocative move, Musk launched a poll asking followers if he should start a new political party. While the South African-born entrepreneur is constitutionally ineligible to run for president, such a move could splinter the conservative vote and damage the GOP’s electoral chances.
Trump retaliated on social media, threatening to cancel major government contracts with Musk’s companies—including rocket launches and Starlink satellite services. Those contracts are estimated to be worth $18 billion, according to U.S. media reports.
“Elon has become a problem. I asked him to leave,” Trump posted on Truth Social, accusing Musk of “going crazy” over the bill, which would end federal EV subsidies—potentially dealing a blow to Tesla. “The fastest way to save billions is to cut government contracts and eliminate handouts to Elon,” Trump added.
Musk had been one of Trump’s biggest backers, both politically and financially. After taking office in January, Trump appointed Musk to lead the Government Operations Efficiency Group (DOGE), tasked with streamlining federal bureaucracy and slashing spending.
But tensions mounted as Musk’s special 130-day government appointment neared its end—and as the billionaire turned his fire on the GOP megabill, a legislative blueprint for Trump’s campaign agenda.
The bill, passed by the House and now under Senate review, includes major tax cuts, increased border security spending, stricter Medicaid rules, and the repeal of clean energy tax credits. However, the Congressional Budget Office warns it could add $3.8 trillion to the national debt by 2034.
Just last week, on May 30, Trump hosted a farewell ceremony for Musk at the White House, praising the billionaire for leading what he called “the most sweeping and impactful government reform in generations.” Musk responded by saying he hoped to remain “a friend and advisor to the president.”
Now, that friendship appears to be hanging by a thread.
