Trump Declares: “I Rebuilt the U.S. Military”
Speaking before 1,002 graduating cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on May 24, President Donald Trump proclaimed that he had restored the Army—and the entire U.S. military—to what he called its rightful place as the “greatest and most powerful force the world has ever known.”
“I know this because I rebuilt the Army—and I rebuilt the entire U.S. military,” Trump stated. “During my first term, I achieved a level of military revitalization no one had done before.”
The 47th president vowed to continue overhauling the military if reelected, pledging to reverse Biden-era policies, particularly those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Trump argued these initiatives distracted the armed forces from their core mission: warfighting.
"The mission of the U.S. military is not to host drag shows or impose foreign cultural agendas,” Trump said. “Its mission is to dominate any adversary and eliminate any threat to America—anytime, anywhere.”
He added, “I freed our soldiers from politically charged training that divided them and undermined their dignity. Under my leadership, no service member—or anyone in this country—will be forced to accept critical race theory or gender transition programs.”
Critical race theory (CRT) is an academic framework that examines how race and racism intersect with law and societal structures. Critics like Trump argue that CRT fosters division and promotes a sense of collective guilt among white Americans.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has taken aggressive steps to eliminate DEI programs across the military and federal agencies, reversing several Biden-era executive orders. He contends that DEI prioritizes race and gender over merit and performance.
“Promotions and appointments will be based on merit,” Trump emphasized at West Point. “We will once again be a nation that values ability above all else.”
In February, West Point dissolved student affinity groups for cadets of color and progressive causes following two executive orders from Trump: “Ending Extreme and Wasteful DEI Programs in Government” and “Ending Unlawful Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity.”
Shortly afterward, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth launched a special task force titled “Restoring America's Combat Power,” aimed at dismantling DEI departments within the Pentagon.
West Point, known for producing the next generation of Army leaders, upholds strict political neutrality and a commitment to the Constitution. This marked Trump’s second commencement address at the academy, following his first in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
