Trump Deploys 2,000 National Guard Troops to Los Angeles Amid Immigration Protests
President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles as protests intensify over recent immigration raids carried out by federal agents.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed late on June 7 that the president signed a memorandum authorizing the deployment, citing the need to “restore order in the face of growing lawlessness.”
“The Trump administration has zero tolerance for criminal activity and violence—especially when directed at law enforcement officers doing their jobs,” Leavitt said.
The move came just an hour after California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, denounced the decision. “This is a deliberate provocation that will only inflame tensions,” he wrote on social media. “We’re working closely with city and county officials. There is currently no unmet need.”
The National Guard, a reserve military force under both state and federal control, can be mobilized by the president during times of national emergency. The White House’s decision follows two nights of unrest in Los Angeles after ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents conducted coordinated raids across the city on June 6 targeting undocumented immigrants.
Eyewitnesses say masked and armed ICE officers stormed workplaces across several neighborhoods, sparking outrage and hours-long confrontations with residents.
Protests escalated again on June 7 in Paramount, where demonstrators gathered near a warehouse reportedly used by ICE. Local media reported that federal agents wearing gas masks used flashbang grenades and tear gas to disperse crowds.
Chanting slogans like “ICE out now” and waving Mexican flags, protesters built makeshift barricades from concrete blocks and shopping carts. At one point, a Justice Department transport bus was surrounded by a crowd near a freeway ramp, prompting authorities to shut down nearby highway exits to prevent a breach.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged public concern over the raids. “Everyone has the right to peaceful protest—but violence and destruction are unacceptable. Those responsible will be held accountable,” she wrote online.
Dan Bongino, Deputy Director of the FBI, said several arrests were made during the June 6 clashes. “If you bring chaos, we bring handcuffs. The rule of law will prevail,” he stated.
Since returning to the White House, President Trump has aggressively ramped up immigration enforcement—delivering on a key campaign promise. His administration has prioritized deportations and workplace crackdowns across major cities.
Los Angeles, a self-declared sanctuary city, is home to more than 1.35 million immigrants, making up 34% of its population as of 2024.
