Trump Deploys Additional 2,000 National Guard Troops to Los Angeles Amid Ongoing Protests
The Pentagon confirmed that President Donald Trump has signed an order to deploy an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, as protests over immigration raids continue to escalate across the city.
“Under the President’s directive, the Department of Defense is mobilizing 2,000 California National Guard personnel to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and ensure federal law enforcement can carry out its mission safely,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced on June 9.
Unnamed U.S. officials said the order, recently signed by President Trump, will take one to two days to implement as troops begin arriving in Los Angeles.
California Governor Gavin Newsom blasted the move, calling it “reckless, senseless, and disrespectful to our military.” He claimed that most of the initial 2,000 Guard members deployed were left idle. “Only about 300 are actually on active duty. The rest are sitting in federal buildings without any direction—without food or water,” Newsom said.
Protests erupted in Los Angeles over the weekend following controversial immigration raids conducted by ICE. The demonstrations quickly turned violent, prompting the President to send the first wave of 2,000 National Guard troops. Governor Newsom has strongly opposed the federal intervention and demanded the deployment be reversed, sparking a public feud between the two leaders.
In addition to the National Guard, the U.S. military has also dispatched 700 Marines to protect federal personnel and infrastructure in Los Angeles, as protests show no sign of slowing down.
Roughly 70 people were arrested during the past weekend. In response, Newsom said the state would deploy more than 800 additional state and local officers “to keep Californians safe.” He added, “This chaos is exactly what Trump wants. Now California has to clean up his mess.”
On June 9, Governor Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco seeking an emergency injunction to block the President’s deployment order. The lawsuit argues that the action violates the Tenth Amendment by infringing on state sovereignty.
Attorney General Bonta stated, “The federal government should step aside and allow state and local agencies to handle this. We are fully capable.”
