Trump Expresses Hope for Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal This Week, Eyes U.S. Business Ties

President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed optimism that Russia and Ukraine could reach a peace agreement this week—and signaled that both nations could soon start “doing big business” with the United States.

“Hopefully, Russia and Ukraine will reach a peace deal this week,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on April 20. “Both will then begin doing major business with the U.S., which is progressing nicely, and will be very profitable.”

Trump did not offer details about the status of U.S.-backed peace talks. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has issued a public response to his statement.

His post comes amid growing frustration from the Trump administration, which has recently warned it could step back from mediation efforts if both sides fail to show genuine commitment toward a ceasefire. The message was shared on Easter weekend, coinciding with a temporary 30-hour ceasefire declared by Russia, set to expire at midnight local time on April 20. Russian President Vladimir Putin had said Ukraine’s response during this period would reflect its readiness for a peaceful solution.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv would honor the ceasefire and proposed extending it beyond April 20. However, both Russia and Ukraine later accused each other of violating the pause in fighting.

Since taking office, Trump has emphasized restoring ties with Moscow and exploring broader economic cooperation between the U.S. and Russia. His administration has also been pushing for a controversial minerals deal with Ukraine, framing it as a form of compensation for military aid previously sent by the Biden administration during the war.

Under the original deal—initially scheduled for signing in February—the U.S. would gain access to Ukraine’s critical mineral resources. In return, Ukraine would contribute 50% of the profits to a jointly managed reconstruction fund. However, the agreement collapsed after a fiery exchange between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Zelensky on February 28.

On April 16, Kyiv announced it had amended the draft deal to enhance economic benefits for both sides. Ukrainian officials said a letter of intent would be signed soon but did not mention whether any changes were made regarding Ukraine’s request for stronger security guarantees.
