U.S. ‘Border Boss’ Denies Threatening to Arrest California Governor
Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s top immigration advisor and widely known as the administration’s “border boss,” says he never called for the arrest of California Governor Gavin Newsom—despite a firestorm sparked by reports to the contrary.
In a June 9 interview with Fox News, Homan sought to clarify remarks that had prompted a furious response from Newsom over the weekend, including the governor’s viral challenge: “Come and get me.”
Homan said the confusion stemmed from an earlier interview with NBC News, where he was asked whether state officials like Governor Newsom or Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could be arrested for interfering with federal immigration enforcement operations.
“My response was: No one is above the law,” Homan explained. “If someone crosses a line and commits a crime, they could be held accountable. But I never said we were going to arrest Newsom.”
Homan emphasized that individuals in Los Angeles who engage in violent protests or assault ICE officers would face legal consequences.
“You have the right to protest. You have free speech under the First Amendment. But if you assault an ICE officer, damage federal property, or obstruct law enforcement, that’s a crime—and the Trump administration won’t tolerate it,” he said.
His remarks came after days of unrest in Los Angeles, a self-declared sanctuary city where protests erupted following a wave of ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants. Some demonstrations turned confrontational, drawing national attention.
Governor Newsom, a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration crackdown, responded defiantly on social media, saying: “You know where to find me.” He insisted that no threats would stop him from “standing up for the people of California.”
Tensions escalated further when President Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles—marking the first time a president has deployed the Guard to a state without that state’s request or approval. The move was strongly opposed by California state officials.
