U.S. Air Force Chief Boasts F-47 Fighter Has Twice the Range of Previous Generations

The U.S. Air Force’s next-generation F-47 fighter jet will have a combat radius of over 1,150 miles—nearly double that of its predecessors—according to Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin, who says the jet will enter service within the next four years.

“The U.S. Air Force will continue to lead the world in speed, agility, and lethality,” Gen. Allvin wrote on social media. “Modernization means fielding systems that pose real challenges to our adversaries while staying cost-effective and aligned with evolving threats.”

Allvin shared an image comparing specifications of fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-generation fighters, highlighting the Boeing F-47’s impressive range. The new aircraft reportedly outpaces legacy fighters like the F-15EX and the stealthy F-35A, which have combat radii of 795 miles and 777 miles, respectively, in air-to-ground missions.

Though exact configurations weren't disclosed, the F-47’s extended reach is seen as a major tactical advantage, particularly in long-range strike scenarios where aerial refueling assets are limited. Aviationist defense analyst Kai Greet noted the extended combat radius would allow the F-47 to hit targets farther from friendly airspace and reduce the operational strain on tanker aircraft.

According to Allvin's post, the F-47 is expected to enter service between 2025 and 2029, with an initial order of more than 185 aircraft. It’s still unclear whether “enter service” refers to limited fielding for testing or full combat readiness. Allvin previously stated that the F-47 would fly before the end of President Donald Trump’s second term in early 2029.

That timeline is ambitious, especially when compared to the F-35A, which took nearly a decade to move from its first flight to active deployment. The F-35 program also continues to face technical challenges across its variants.

The initial F-47 production figure falls short of the previously announced goal of 200 aircraft. Procurement numbers may shift as the Air Force refines its requirements throughout the program's development.

The specs shared by Allvin list the F-47’s top speed at roughly 1,535 mph—on par with the F-22—and give it a “stealth ++” rating, surpassing the “+” or unranked stealth levels of current-generation fighters like the F-22 and F-35.

In a major shift, President Trump announced in March that Boeing, not Lockheed Martin, had been awarded the contract to build America’s sixth-generation fighter, officially designated the F-47.

Allvin said the F-47 would outperform the F-22 in multiple categories. A 2018 estimate by the Congressional Budget Office pegged the unit cost of a sixth-generation fighter at around $300 million—though that figure is likely to be significantly higher today.
