U.S. Attorney General Warns Federal Force Could Be Escalated in Los Angeles
On June 11, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a firm warning that the federal government is prepared to deepen its military involvement in Los Angeles if state authorities fail to regain control of the protests. “We have the situation in California under control for now—but we won’t hesitate to go further if necessary,” Bondi said outside the White House. She added, “If the state can’t protect its own citizens, we will.” Bondi highlighted the possible invocation of the Insurrection Act, which would authorize direct military intervention, moving beyond the limited protection of federal property that has been in place so far. President Trump has refrained from activating the act but continues to brand protestors in Los Angeles as “insurrectionists.” So far, federal troops—including 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines—have been deployed to safeguard federal personnel and buildings amid downtown unrest. Although the demonstrations have spread beyond LA’s core, actual violence has remained largely confined to a smaller urban area. Authorities have enforced a city-wide curfew and have arrested more than 300 individuals over the past two days. Bondi stated the federal strategy is to work within legal boundaries to protect law enforcement and all Californians. She stressed that the events in LA go beyond mere looting—they constitute organized violence.
Regarding protests elsewhere, Bondi praised New York City’s approach, noting local officials acted quickly and effectively to manage peaceful demonstrations. She implied other cities should follow suit instead of relying on federal troops. Bondi’s stark message reflects a major escalation in federal posture, with the Trump administration signaling readiness to wield military authority in domestic law enforcement.
