U.S. Deployment of Troops to Los Angeles Estimated to Cost $134 Million

The Pentagon will spend approximately $134 million to deploy nearly 5,000 troops to Los Angeles in response to ongoing protests, according to a senior defense official.

During a congressional hearing on June 10, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Financial Management Bryn MacDonnel told lawmakers that the 60-day deployment would be funded directly from the Pentagon’s budget. The costs will cover transportation, lodging, food, and other operational expenses.

The disclosure came amid heated questioning in the House of Representatives, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was pressed by Democratic Congressman Pete Aguilar of California to justify the troop mobilization. Hegseth responded that President Donald Trump “believes in law and order and has full authority to act accordingly.”

Aguilar challenged the legal basis of the deployment, arguing that placing U.S. troops so close to law enforcement operations is prohibited unless the president formally invokes the Insurrection Act.

The Pentagon has deployed 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles to protect federal personnel and property after mass protests erupted over President Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies.

California officials, along with local leaders, have criticized the move, warning that the military presence is escalating tensions. While experts and former defense officials acknowledge that the deployment is technically legal, they caution that it puts the military in a politically sensitive position.

Protests continue across the city, with more than 70 people arrested over the past weekend. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the deployment of an additional 800 state and local law enforcement officers to “ensure public safety.”
