The U.S. military announced it has carried out strikes on more than 800 Houthi targets in Yemen, killing hundreds of fighters since launching an air campaign on March 15.
"Since the start of Operation Rough Rider, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces have struck more than 800 targets. The airstrikes have eliminated hundreds of Houthi militants and numerous key leaders," CENTCOM said in a statement on April 27.
Operation Rough Rider, launched on March 15, has deployed some of America’s most advanced military assets in an intensive air campaign aimed at crippling Houthi infrastructure and bases to stop their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. CENTCOM reported that the strikes have destroyed command centers, air defense systems, advanced weapons production sites, and weapons storage facilities.
While the exact cost of the campaign remains undisclosed, sources familiar with the operations estimated that the U.S. military had spent nearly $1 billion within the first three weeks alone.
Despite the U.S. air campaign, Houthi forces have continued to fire missiles and drones at American warships in the Red Sea and have also launched ballistic missiles targeting Israeli territory. They have successfully shot down multiple U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones during this period.
CENTCOM stated that Operation Rough Rider has significantly reduced the Houthis' operational pace and effectiveness, noting a 69% decrease in ballistic missile launches and a 55% drop in suicide drone attacks.
The command also accused Iran of continuing to support the Houthis. "The Houthis could not sustain their operations against U.S. forces without Iranian backing. We will continue to escalate pressure until freedom of navigation and deterrence are fully restored in the region," CENTCOM said.
The Houthis began targeting shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden following the outbreak of conflict in Gaza in October 2023, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Their attacks have severely disrupted maritime traffic through the Suez Canal, a critical route handling about 12% of global trade, forcing many shipping companies to reroute around the southern tip of Africa.
