UK Appoints First Female Chief of MI6
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has named Blaise Metreweli as the new head of the Secret Intelligence Service—better known as MI6—making her the first woman ever to lead the storied spy agency.
The announcement came on June 15, with Starmer calling her appointment “historic.” Metreweli, 47, will become MI6’s 18th chief, succeeding current director Richard Moore, whose five-year term ends this fall.
Metreweli will officially take over on October 1. By tradition, the MI6 chief is the only publicly named officer in the agency and is referred to internally by the letter “C,” short for “Chief.”
“I’m proud and honored to be chosen to lead my service,” Metreweli said in a statement. Moore praised her appointment on X, writing: “Blaise has had a distinguished career as both an intelligence officer and leader. She has all the qualities to be an outstanding ‘C.’”
Metreweli joined MI6 in 1999 and has served extensively in the Middle East and Europe. Prior to her promotion, she led the agency’s technology division—also known as the “Q” department, a nod to the fictional research unit featured in the James Bond films that handles top-secret tech and gadgets.
Starmer said the appointment comes at a time when the role of British intelligence “has never been more critical,” citing growing threats from cyberattacks to surveillance ships.
“I’m confident that Director Metreweli will lead MI6 in defending our country through the challenges ahead,” the prime minister added.
MI6 now joins MI5 and GCHQ—Britain’s two other major intelligence agencies—in having had female leadership.
