Ukraine Strikes Deep: Kyiv Claims Attacks on Two Key Russian Airbases
Ukraine has launched strikes on two major Russian airbases that Kyiv says are central hubs for long-range bombing raids targeting Ukrainian cities.
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, overnight operations on June 5–6 successfully hit the Engels airbase in Saratov Oblast—home to Russia’s fleet of strategic bombers. The base reportedly housed aircraft regrouping after Ukraine’s June 1 “Spider Web” drone offensive.
At least three fuel and lubricant storage tanks were hit, igniting massive fires and triggering thick black smoke and dozens of explosions, the Ukrainian military claimed in a statement.
Ukraine also targeted Dyagilevo Airbase in Ryazan Oblast, a critical launch point for Russia’s aerial refueling aircraft and bomber escorts. "Strategic bombers used in missile attacks against Ukraine also take off from Dyagilevo," the General Staff noted. Despite Russian air defenses being activated, fires were reported near the base. Kyiv said it is still assessing the full extent of damage inflicted on Russian forces.
Roman Busargin, governor of Saratov Oblast, confirmed a fire had broken out at an unnamed “industrial enterprise” and acknowledged minor damage to a residential building caused by a drone strike. No casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed its air defenses intercepted 174 Ukrainian drones across 10 regions overnight—including Saratov and Ryazan—but did not disclose how many were launched or whether any damage occurred.
Social media videos and images appeared to show large-scale fires burning at Engels, reportedly near a fuel depot supplying the airbase.
Engels Airbase houses Russia’s strategic Tu-160 bombers, along with numerous Tu-22M3 and Tu-95MS aircraft. The facility lies about 700 kilometers from the front lines. Dyagilevo is also a critical node in Russia’s long-range strike operations and was previously targeted during Ukraine’s “Spider Web” campaign.
Satellite imagery from June 2 appeared to show Dyagilevo’s infrastructure intact, with no visible aircraft damage. However, Ukrainian forces have recently escalated their long-range operations deep into Russian territory.
During the June 1 “Spider Web” campaign, Ukraine claimed it damaged or destroyed 41 Russian aircraft—including an A-50 early warning plane, strategic bombers (Tu-160, Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3), transport planes (An-12), and Il-78 refueling aircraft. On June 3, Ukraine also said it struck the Crimea bridge for the third time.
Russian authorities have further accused Kyiv of orchestrating two bomb attacks on bridges in Bryansk and Kursk oblasts. Ukraine has not confirmed involvement.
