VP Vance: Elon Musk Made a “Huge Mistake” in Feuding With Trump

Vice President JD Vance says Elon Musk crossed a line in his public clash with President Donald Trump—and may never be able to win back the president’s favor.

“I think the richest man in the world made a huge mistake by picking a fight with the most powerful man in the world,” Vance said in a June 7 podcast, referring to Musk and Trump, respectively.

Vance, a loyal Trump ally, cast doubt on the possibility of reconciliation after the two men’s fiery exchange on social media earlier this week. “I’ll always stand by the president. I’d love to see Elon come back into the fold, but it may be too late now—he’s gone off the deep end,” he said.

Musk was once Trump’s biggest campaign donor and was appointed in January to lead the White House’s Government Operations Efficiency Group (DOGE), aimed at cutting waste and streamlining the federal bureaucracy.

But the relationship soured after Musk’s 130-day government tenure ended. He began publicly attacking the Republican Party’s sweeping $4.5 trillion tax bill—Trump’s top legislative priority—and tensions boiled over on June 5 when both men took their fight to social media.

In one since-deleted post, Musk claimed Trump’s name appeared in the sealed files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in jail in 2019. In another, Musk voiced support for Trump’s impeachment and suggested VP Vance should replace him.

Both posts were no longer visible by June 7.

President Trump later downplayed the dispute, telling reporters he had “no interest” in speaking with Musk “anytime soon.”

Several Republicans have rallied behind Trump, signaling where their loyalty lies. “It’s bad for the country when these two are at odds—but I think it’s even worse for Musk,” Vance said.

While both men have stopped publicly attacking each other—reportedly after behind-the-scenes calls between aides on June 6—their political future as allies remains uncertain.

Still, some Republicans are hopeful for a reconciliation. “Trump knows that sometimes you clash with people you admire and trust. That’s just life,” said GOP Rep. Jimmy Patronis. “Mark my words, they’ll patch things up in a month.”
